This room contains works by a series of contemporary artists who have broken with the flat surface of the canvas, which has predominated in art for centuries, to seek new forms of expression. We can see this in Julian Opie’s bas-reliefs, which recall those of ancient Egypt and classical Greece; in the work of El Anatsui composed of caps from the liquor bottles that came to Africa through colonialism; in the polished stainless-steel surfaces of Anish Kapoor, Tony Cragg and Elmgreen & Dragset, in which visitors come to form part of the work by seeing themselves reflected; in the cosmic blue that Blanca Muñoz has incorporated into her steel plates; or in the sanded surfaces of David Rodríguez Caballero, in what constitutes his practice of painting without paint.
