Introduction
Hortensia Herrero is an art collector, patron and businesswoman. In 2023 she has launched this centre that bears her name, in which a major part of her collection of contemporary art can be seen. Her philosophy of patronage, based on giving back to society what society has given to you, has led her to bring some of the best international art to Valencia, so that Valencians and all those who visit the city can enjoy it.
Over the last ten years, Hortensia Herrero and her artistic advisor, Javier Molins, have assembled a collection of works by the most outstanding artists of the twenty-first century, some of whom have designed site-specific pieces for various spaces in this building. These include artists such as Tomás Saraceno, for the courtyard of the art centre, Jaume Plensa, for the apse that leads to the garden, Sean Scully, for the former chapel, and Mat Collishaw, Olafur Eliasson and Cristina Iglesias, who have created installations for various of the passageways. These pieces enter into a dialogue with the architecture of the place, and with the more than one hundred works by nearly fifty artists that make up this first presentation of the Hortensia Herrero collection.
